Jewelry and Gemstones
Thailand has a long history of natural gem resources. As a result the
Thai gemstone and jewelry industry was a natural conclusion as the Thai
people have an established tradition for fine craftsmanship.
Thailand is well known for its Ruby and Sapphire deposits and gems from
many areas around the world find their way to Bangkok as Thai cutting
skills are recognized as superior to many other locations.
Thai Gold, which is purchased in a weight unit of one Baht . In the past
Thailand had extensive gold mines, and its former name of Siam literally
means 'gold'. Thai gold is a .965 fine, a little over 23k. One Baht of
gold is 15.2grams. The price for Thai gold is displayed in every gold
shop and that price is not negotiable. A piece of gold jewellery is
therefore sold by weight, plus a manufacturing charge, depending how
ornate or labor intensive the piece has been to make.
